Tyler Perry’s House of Payne | Several Issues That The Reboot Is Still Suffering From
House of Payne Reboot: What’s Working, What’s Not, and Where It Could Go Next
Okay, House of Payne fans—let’s talk. While the reboot has had its ups and downs, I have to admit: I still enjoy it for what it is. From season 9 to where we are now in season 14, it’s been a journey. But if I had to pick the standout, season 13 captured the spirit of the original series more than any of the other reboot seasons. Thankfully, season 14 seems to be continuing that trend, with more story-driven episodes rather than self-contained, forgettable plots that wrap up before the credits roll.
That said, the reboot isn’t without its issues.
1. We Need More Set Pieces
One of the biggest problems? The lack of new locations. The entire series feels like it revolves around Curtis and Ella’s house, CJ and Janine’s home, and Calvin’s condo. That’s it. There’s no firehouse anymore, no barbershop, nothing that expands the world of the show. Why can’t we see the barbershop crew again? Why can’t Malik and Lisa have their own apartment set?
Tyler Perry Studios has the resources—just look at Zatima, which uses a barbershop set. Reuse that with some different lighting, and bam—problem solved. It’s baffling that House of Payne and Assisted Living still look and feel more like stage plays than dynamic television series.
2. Floyd Deserves Better
Speaking of the barbershop, why not bring it back with Floyd at the helm? They could’ve had Floyd use his cut from dissolving the barbecue business with Curtis to reopen his old spot or start a new one. He’s got the hustle and business know-how. That alone would inject some fresh energy and nostalgia.
3. The Laura Problem
Let’s talk about Calvin and Laura. Fans are tired. They’ve been engaged since season 10, and we’re in season 14 now—with zero movement on the wedding. Meanwhile, Lisa was pregnant when they got engaged, and now Melissa is several months old. What gives?
Even if Laura exits the show, it’s not guaranteed that Miranda and Calvin will just get back together. Frankly, it would feel forced. Calvin needs a period of growth and independence, not a quick switch from one relationship to the next.
4. Missed Opportunities for Lisa and Malik
Malik’s political storyline is just beginning, but Lisa’s been pushed to the background—especially since Jasmine came back. She’s barely been present this season or the last. If they are building toward a proposal, great. But first, give them their own space. A new apartment set could open doors for unique couple-centered stories.
5. Recycled Curtis Storylines
Curtis has largely been reduced to comic relief revolving around the barbecue business and banter with Floyd. It’s time he got more depth again. Maybe a health scare, a mentorship role, or a fresh challenge to tackle—something to bring out the Curtis of earlier seasons.
6. CJ and Janine’s Drama
CJ and Janine’s storyline about marital tension has potential, but it’s been uneven. More emotional depth and better pacing would do wonders here. And Janine’s return is a great opportunity—let’s not waste it.
7. Ella and the Church
One of the bright spots of recent episodes has been Ella’s church work, especially the storyline involving the abused woman. That was the kind of grounded, emotional narrative the show used to excel at. More of that, please.
Final Thoughts
Despite its flaws, House of Payne is showing signs of getting back to what made it special. The writing feels more grounded, the characters are finding their rhythm again, and the story arcs—especially Jasmine’s college journey—are keeping fans talking. But the show needs to commit to growth. More settings. More meaningful storylines. And a little less rinse-and-repeat.
Here’s hoping the momentum carries through the rest of season 14—and maybe even into a season 15.
What do you think? Are you happy with where the show is headed? What storylines are working—or not working—for you? Let’s talk in the comments.
