Tyler Perry's Zatima & Sistas

Tyler Perry’s Sistas | Season 8 Was Jamey Giddens’ Final Season In The Writers’ Room

Major Shake-Up: Jamie Giddens Departs ‘Sistas’ Writing Team! What’s Next?

Hey folks,

So recently, I made a video about Jamie Giddens, who served as the head writer for Sistas Season 8. If you haven’t heard, he’s now moving over to Beyond the Gates to write for that soap opera. But here’s the real shocker—Wednesday’s finale marked the end of his time with Sistas!

According to his tweet:

“My work here is quite literally done. Tonight’s episode marks the end of my time at Sistas. Immense thanks to Mr. Perry and Mark Swinton for the incredible opportunity. Congrats to the cast and crew on the Season 9 renewal!”

So yeah, Jamie is officially leaving the Sistas writing team.

Could Tyler Perry Take Over?

Now, I don’t know for sure, but I’m going to take a wild guess here. Since Jamie was the head writer and is now off to other projects, it’s possible that Tyler Perry himself is stepping back into the writers’ room. Again, this is just speculation. But maybe Tyler decided to return to “get things back on track.”

If that’s the case, he could end up being the de facto head writer for Season 9, working alongside the remaining five writers. A lot of people sent me Jamie’s tweet, but as far as I know, no other writers from Season 8 have publicly stated that they’re leaving too. So, for now, we can assume the show will move forward with its current team—minus Jamie.

Fan Reactions Are… Divided

The responses to Jamie’s departure? Well, let’s just say they were interesting. You can check out his Twitter (or Instagram) if you want to see for yourself. Some fans wished him well—others, not so much.

Let’s be real: stepping into an already-established show with over 100 episodes and six seasons is not an easy job. Sistas has a passionate fanbase, and any creative changes are bound to stir up strong opinions.

Did The New Writers Even Watch Sistas?

Before signing off, Jamie posted something that got a lot of attention.

I’ve said this before in my Season 7 reviews—there were moments where it really felt like the writers were trying to recapture the essence of Season 1. They brought back old plot points and had the girls spending more time together, like they did in the early days.

But then… things got weird.

Tyler Perry recently made a comment during the Six Triple Eight tour, saying:

“If I were hired to write for a long-running show, I’d make sure to watch the previous episodes and understand the characters.”

That statement led a lot of fans to speculate: Did the new writers actually watch the show? Because honestly, at times, it felt like they didn’t.

Character Development Thrown Out the Window

Take Zac and Fatima, for example. They’re fan favorites, but in Season 8, their storyline was completely off. And no, I’m not just talking about the “Is Zac the father?” drama.

Zac’s entire characterization felt wrong—like any growth he had just disappeared overnight. Suddenly, he was more reckless and dismissive of Fatima’s feelings. And don’t even get me started on Andy! Fatima has always been her protector, sure, but Andy has never been this… pitiful.

Danny? Phenomenal in Season 7. But in Season 8? Good Lord.

Watching vs. Understanding

Here’s the thing: if the new writers really did watch all six seasons, yet still produced something that felt so off, it makes me think they didn’t actually comprehend what they were watching.

And no, that’s not meant to be a shady jab. It’s just the reality. Fans have been asking the same questions:

  • Why is Zac acting so childish?

  • Why does Andy suddenly lack all backbone?

  • Why does it feel like these characters have regressed?

It’s almost as if the new writers took the Season 1 versions of these characters and dropped them into Seasons 7 and 8—without accounting for all the growth that had happened in between. And that’s… not good.

What’s Next for Sistas?

All that being said, I do wish Jamie well. And hey, Beyond the Gates is a personal favorite of mine (and a lot of other people), so I hope he does it justice.

While Sistas might have been a bit of a creative mess with the writing changes, Jamie knows how to craft a compelling soap opera. If you’ve seen Ambitions on OWN, you know the guy can cook! So I’m not worried about what he’ll bring to Beyond the Gates.

But Sistas? That’s a different story.
