Belle Dingle and Gemma Andrews have quite the past in Emmerdale.

The fan favourite character is currently in the midst of a huge storyline with her husband Tom King, who is set to turn even more controlling following their marriage. In a recent episode, Belle has been trying to support Tom’s family and Nicola and Jimmy’s daughter Angelica, who is to face some time in a children’s secure home following Heath’s death earlier this year.

Belle actually spent some time in a similar secure home when she was young, which all happened because of the death of her best friend Gemma Andrews several years ago. We look at what previously happened in the soap and how it leads to the events of today.

Who was Gemma in Emmerdale?

Gemma joined Emmerdale back in 2013 when she was at the heart of the storyline. Back then, Gemma had spent the night with Sean Spencer but then found out she was pregnant. She didn’t want to tell her dad Dom but when he discovered the pregnancy test, he flew at her, asking what happened. However, Alicia arrived and covered to Gemma, telling him the pregnancy test was hers.

During her time in the village, as well as being friends with Belle, she was also pally with Sean Spencer and Thomas King. However, things turned nasty where her and Belle fell out, leading to her sudden death and big ramifications for Belle.

Who did Belle kill in Emmerdale?

Belle was the one who ended up killing Gemma back in 2014 in shocking scenes. She grew jealous over Belle and Sean getting closer and whilst Belle tried to reason with her, Gemma was not happy and mean words were exchanged which led to Gemma slapping Belle and Belle pushing her over. She hit her head and began bleeding, but she didn’t die at that moment.

An angry Belle stormed off but as Gemma tried to make it home, she collapsed and was unconscious. She was found a day later and immediately rushed to hospital, where she went in for an operation. However, Gemma had lost brain stem function and there was no way she would recover, as Dom sat by her side whilst her life support was switched off.

The death resulted in Belle being put into a detention centre. It was meant to be for three years, but it ended up not being that long. Whilst she was in the centre, Belle struggled with her mental health and began hearing Gemma’s voice.

Belle underwent psychological treatment following her release as she continued to struggle with hearing Gemma’s voice.
