She knew she was facing a custodial sentence but tonight the judgement was delivered with a heartbreaking twist.

The judge told her: “Your behaviour was reckless, irresponsible and ultimately led to the death of your friend.

“The loss of a 16 year life is a tragedy and something that this court does not take lightly. You and Heathcliffe’s family will have to live with the consequences of that day for the rest of your lives.

“Having pleaded guilty to the offences of death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and aggravated vehicle taking, I feel there is no alternative than that of a custodial sentence.

“However taking into account your guilty plea, the pre-sentencing report and statements provided by friends and family, therefore that sentence is considerably shorter than it would have been.

“Angelica, you are sentenced to eight months detention at a secure children’s home.”

Later at home, despite the result being better than expected, Jimmy and Nicola struggled to come to terms with it all.

Nicola saw Angelica’s teddy and began sobbing and it soon became clear why.

But outside there was a shock coming as it was revealed Angelica wasn’t in a local institution.

Instead she was sent four hours away to Bristol – leaving her family and friends devastated.
